New Diplomas
The introduction of new specialised Diplomas is a major innovation in the examinations system.
They will include both academic and vocational material, covering each occupational sector of the economy. They will be available at three levels – 1 (foundation), 2 (higher) and 3 (advanced) and will involve combining units from several awarding bodies, taught by a number of exam centres.
To achieve a Diploma, young people will need to achieve appropriate standards in English and maths, specialised material, relevant GCSEs and A levels and have work experience. They will also do an extended project in the Advanced and Progression Diplomas.
Diploma students will follow an area of interest – a line of learning. By 2010, 14 employment sector lines will be introduced and by 2015 there will be a national entitlement for every 14-19 year old, in addition to the existing national curriculum.
The first five lines of learning will be available in 2008:
- Information and communication technology
- Engineering
- Society, health and development
- Creative and media
- Construction and the built environment
The following lines of learning will be available by 2010:
- Business, administration and finance
- Hair and beauty
- Hospitality
- Environmental and land based studies
- Manufacturing and product design
- Public services
- Retail, sport and leisure
- Travel and tourism
Three additional Diplomas, which will not be based around a specific employment sector, will
be available to young people for the first time from 2011. They will guarantee a core of
functional skills in English, Maths and ICT, in-depth knowledge of the subject area and
practical skills. They will be in:
- Science
- Languages
- Humanities
The first review of 14-19 qualifications will take place in 2013, replacing the A level review scheduled for 2008.
